Not Wanting to be Here

“Stress is caused by being here and wanting to be there.”

Eckhart Tolle

Mindfulness, as we know, is tethering the mind to the body and being in the present moment. But the mind wants to go elsewhere. The mind has a lot of good ideas–places to go, people to see, things to do. Oh, a lot of things to do.

Every time we follow the mind away from the present moment, stress accumulates in the body. Usually, the stress is so small as to be unnoticeable. Every thought i have causes little muscles in my forehead to squinch up. You can imagine what my forehead looks like after a few decades of oh-so-slight squinching.

The body keeps the score of every slight tension as well as the big ones.

Let’s relax into the present moment. Enjoy this here. Right now.
