Labyrinth

I walked a friend’s labyrinth last week. Around and around, back and forth. Just when you think you’re getting close to the center, the path leads to the outermost ring. Back and forth. Then suddenly, the center stone stands in front of you. Arrived!

Our progress in meditation often feels like a labyrinth. Just when you think you’re about to arrive at awakening, you’re thrown back to square one.

A few people–maybe 30%–experience a ka-boom awakening. For the vast majority of us, it’s a gradual path. So close, you can see it, feel it, know it in your bones. And then…. Oh those triggers. They zing you back out to a distant orbit. Conditioning takes a long time to de-condition and re-condition.

Then suddenly, through effortless effort, there you are.
